General Candle Safety:

Burn candles inside a one-foot circle of safety, free of anything that can burn. Use candles only with constant adult supervision. Extinguish candles when leaving a room or going to sleep. Keep candles well away from flammable items such as Christmas trees, books, curtains, decorations. Make sure candles are placed on a secure piece of furniture in sturdy, noncombustible holders that will not tip, and are big enough to collect dripping wax.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended!
  • Some candles may resemble food or drinks, keep burning candles away from children and pets.
  • Do not place near flammable objects such as curtains, walls, etc.
  • Place on a protected, heat resistant, level surface.
  • Keep candle free of wick trimmings, or other foreign matter that could be a fire hazard.
  • Avoid burning in drafts.
  • Avoid moving a burning candle.
  • Keep wick trimmed to 1/4 inch at all times to avoid carbon build up on the wick and prevent dark smoking and soot.
  • Allow candle to cool before trimming wick or relighting.

Gel Wax Information & Safety:

What is gel wax?

Clear gel wax is commonly produced from a hydrocarbon material. Penreco http://penreco.com/ markets a series of patented gels for use in the manufacture of clear gel candles under the Versagel™ brand name. The gels are clear and odorless, and do not discolor with age. Gel candle wicks should be kept trimmed to 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch each time before lighting. Burn only for the time recommended to avoid overheating the container which could break if too hot.

....Candle Burning Tips:

  • Burn paraffin wax candles 1 hour for each inch of it's diameter.  This allows the flame time to melt the wax to the outer edge.  Burning less time will cause the candle to core burn down the middle & shorten burn time.  Example: a 4" wide candle should be burned for 4 hours at a time. As the candle burns near the outer edge, gently "hug" the wax inward with the palms of your hands to create a "lip" to prevent wax from spilling over the edge. Doing this will also help the candle "remember" how far to burn the next time it is burned.
  • Use fingernail clippers to trim wicks in jars in where scissors won't fit.
  • Candle colors will fade if left in direct sunlight or spotlights for extended periods of time.
  • Refrigerate tapers or pillars before using and they will burn more slowly and evenly.  Wrap in foil or plastic before refrigeration to prevent wicks from absorbing moisture.
  • To extinguish a candle, use a candle snuffer, or hold fingers in front of the flame and blow.  This will prevent hot wax from splattering.
  • If wick moves off center, extinquish the flame and use a toothpick to gently push it back to center as the wax cools to hold it in place.
  • To remove soot builds up inside a glass container, wipe with a paper towel and Window cleaner, or Baby wipes.  Wipe over the cleaned area with water dampened paper towel afterward. Allow the container to dry thoroughly before re-lighting.
  • Repair soiled or scratched candles by rubbing the surface with an old nylon stocking -- you will be amazed at what this will do for a damaged candle!
  • Remove wax from candle holders by placing in the freezer for about 20 minutes. Remaining wax will pop right out!
